The New Year is nearly here.
Everyone is waiting for this moment to make a fresh start and set some serious resolutions. It is an exciting time, but how do people plan to make them work? That was the question Theo was reflecting on. He noticed that in past years, people tended to take one of two approaches to this moment.
Some would wait until the last minute to set their resolutions. Most of them would end up with a long list they could not choose from, and could not focus on the one thing they could truly commit to, which already set them up for failure.
Others knew exactly which direction they wanted to take at the start of the year, yet wanted to spend all their time going to the opposite extreme, saying goodbye to old habits and their old self, trying to break away from their own patterns and their own prison.
No wonder that by the third or fourth day of the New Year, many had already broken their vows and the promises they made to themselves, losing faith in themselves and confidence in their ability to reach their higher potential. A month or so later, they would not even remember the special resolution that once gave them hope for change.
So once again, people would surrender to a lesser version of themselves, the one they are used to, calling it by a fancier name: their comfort zone. In that moment, they pretended this was what made them happy. And in the end, they would indulge once more in the very thing they promised themselves they would never do again.
Still, there is hope to make a difference.
Theo suggests taking a different approach. Here are his points on the matter:
· Prepare yourself physically, mentally, emotionally and on every other level for this big change; real change never happens from one minute to the next
· Focus on one change at a time; don’t build a long list you won’t even remember a moment later
· Choose your resolutions wisely; avoid anything unsustainable, such as cutting out carbs, which can have a very negative effect on your physical, mental and emotional well-being
· Never underestimate your unconscious mind, which will try to trip you up at any given moment
· Don’t give up the war; if you have only lost a battle, stand up and keep fighting
· Stay flexible and adapt to what you learn along the journey of change; sometimes you need to let go of what you thought was good for you in favour of what you discover is good for you
· Never laugh at anyone who is trying, or struggling, to make a difference in their life
· Always keep faith in your highest potential
On this high note, Theo and his fellowship wish you all the best for the new year, total success in your new challenge, victory at a new milestone and plenty of joy on this new journey.
